Gadaladeniya temple

Gadaladeniya Temple is situated at Pilimathalawa, Kandy. When you are traveling from Colombo to Kandy, Gadaladeniaya temple road is on your right hand side. After just passed Pilimathalawa Town, Gadaladeniya Temple is away 2 km from Kandy - Colombo highway. The well-known Ambekke Devalaya and Lankathilaka Viharaya also situated nearby.

The Gadaladeniya temple is located in a little hilltop, but not hard to climb up. Small vehicles such as car or van could be possible to drive up to the hill. You can have a good view of the surrounding area from the temple.

Sembuwaththa Lake

Sembuwaththa lake - Elkaduwa (සෙම්බුවත්ත වැව)

Sembuwaththa Lake is located in the premises of Elkaduwa tea plantation. Elakaduwa is situated about 14 kilometers away from Matale town and 150 - 160 Kilometers from Colombo. If you are coming from Colombo take the right turn at the Elwala junction which meet before 3 - 4 Kilometers from Matale Town. The road will take you directly to Elkaduwa and take left turn towards down the hill at Elkaduwa town. There are few turns from Elkaduwa to Sembuwaththa lake. It's better to ask from villager for correct directions. The road is not in good condition from Elkaduwa to Sembuwaththa. Four wheel vehicle is the Best choose for tackle hard parts of the journey. Anyway It's possible to reach there by any vehicle such as Car, Van, Tuk Tuk or Motorbike, If you are driving very carefully.

There is a ticket counter at the entrance of Tea factory. The Tea factory is belongs to Elkaduwa estate but not functioning currently. Ticket costs 150 Rupees per person seems to be too much.

There is about 1 - 2 kilometers travel to Sembuwaththa lake from the Ticket counter. The lake situated at the top of the hill. Vehicles are allowed to go up there. The lake surrounded by Tea fields and Pinus plantation. It is not recommended to bath at lake since the lake is seems to be so muddy. There is a great swimming pool to bath at other end of the lake. It's feeding by natural water stream.

The surround view is amazing from the top of the hill. Summer huts and kids play points has built around the lake. Great place to spent a day away from rush world and feel the nature.

If you are travelling along Colombo - Kandy road, there are few places everyone remembers with less effort. Pahala Kadugannawa is at the top of above list because of magnificent view from there. Many of travelers take few minutes to stop their vehicles road side and watch and feel this beautiful creation of nature. Kadugannawa is the place where you get the first feeling you are entering to the Hill capital. In most of times roads are misty and in the morning it makes a view like you are in heaven since you can see all clouds at down of the valley. Bible rock or Bathalegala in other words also a very attractive scene from Pahala Kadugannawa.

I was lucky to capture some good pictures of the eclipse from my home at Pilimathalawa. There was a clear sky without cloud made an ideal environment to watch the total lunar eclipse with no disturbance.

Great place to bath on your trip - බටංගල්ල

Sri Lanka is a paradise full of natural resources. Waterfalls, Rivers, Lakes, Forests everywhere. It's not hard to find an amazing place to bath on your trip in any part of Sri Lanka. If you are travelling closed to Avissawella, there are lots of beautiful places to bath within small distances. Most popular Kithulgala is also few kilometers away from Avissawella. There are some other excellent places on Dehi-owita - Ehaliyagoda road but still remains unpopular. In mt older posts you may see Watawala and Dahan wala, very beautiful places to have a safe bath on your journey. This place is also closed to Panawala which is near by above two places, most probably the branches of same river. Water is not deep and ideal to have a safe bath with all of your family members.

Pedro estate is closed to Nuwara Eliya city. It's possible to reach Pedro Estate by bus within 10-15 minutes from Nuwara Eliya town. Pedro Estate is Most probably the Tea factory at highest elevation in Sri Lanka. The Pedro estate established in 1885 and elevation is 1910 metes from sea level. More than 600 of hectares belongs to Pedro estate spread around Nuwara Eliya. Pedro estate has Tea center where is any Local or Foreign traveler can see how Sri Lankan finest black tea is processing. They have a guiding service to take visitors through the Tea factory with brief explanations. Charge for the guiding service is just 50 Rupees for a Sri Lankan visitor and little bit higher for foreigners. Visitors could see all the processes of orthodox black tea respectively Withering, Rolling, Rotorvaining, Fermenting, Firing, Sifting and packing. Tea packs are also available at the Tea Center and you will be served with a warm, tasty cup of tea once you are there.

Kande Ela Forest Garden is located closed to Meepilimana reservoir on Nuwara Eliya - Horton plain road. Kande Ela Forest Garden is adjoined to Hakgala Strict Forest Reservation and one side bordered by Meepilimana Reservoir. Forest Department maintain the Kande Ela Forest Garden for educational purposes. Their is a nature trail through the forest with many number of examples for Soil conservation methods, Types of plants, Environment pollution, Traditional culture. 4-5 Kilometers long trail through forest takes about one hour to complete by walk. Kande Ela Forest Garden is also very close to Strawberry farm managed by Ramya Horticulture. You can obtain a leaflet with a map of trail at the ticket counter. There is an access road to Elgin Falls through Kande Ela Forest Garden which is very beautiful and 6 kilometers far away from trail path.

Hasalaka is a rural area at the edge of the Central province with dry and hot climate. There are several routes to get to Hasalaka, most common route via Hunnasgiriya and through 18 elbow bends which 60 - 68 Km distance from Kandy. Another way to get there is take right turn at the Haragama bridge and drive along kings way you can drive through beautiful scenes of Randenigala, Rantambe reservoirs, Famous Minipe amuna and Mahiyangana. There is also another uncommon route via Matale. two different routes from Matale via Elahera or Riverstone. Nuwara Eliya is one of the best tourists attractive travel destination in Sri Lanka. Nuwara Eliya town is situated about 170Km away from Colombo. 68Km from Peradeniya. Nuwara Eliya has a totally different climatic conditions than other areas of Sri Lanka. Almost everyday's lowest temperature is record from the Nuwara Eliya Area. Nuwara Eliya is elevated 1868m above from the sea level. Nuwra Eliya is most probably the best location for beautiful scenery. More >>

Nuwara Eliya town has beautifully landscaped and well organized. You can arrive there by bus or private vehicle. access roads are almost in well condition. If you plan to visit there by train, you will have to get off at Nanuoya station and arrange suitable transport to Nuwara Eliya town. Accommodation will not be a problem at all since there are large number of Hotels, restaurants, guest houses located around the area. Rates are varies with the facilities of the accommodation. Anyway be aware to arrange accommodation before you arrive there if you are planning to visit Nuwara Eliya on the season of April. All accommodations will be filled and rates may be little higher than other months on April due to high demand of tourists.

It's just a 2 hour journey if you are starting from Kandy. Victoria Park is one of the most attractive places of Nuwara Eliya town located at the center of the town and will not be hard to find. Gregory Lake is another attractive place to spent the time locate at one end of the city. There are many activities around the area such as Bicycle riding, boat riding, Horse riding, walking paths. Hakgala Garden is another famous location if you visit Nuwara Eliya. Hakgala is situated about 14Km away from Nuwara Eliya town along Welimada road. You can also visit Pedro Estate where is not much far from Nuwara Eliya town. It's just a 20 minutes drive to the Pedro Tea estate. You can have unforgettable experience at one of the most cleanest and well organized Tea factory in Sri Lanka. They guide you around the Tea factory and you will be allowed to see inside of the Tea Factory and how worlds finest Tea is manufacturing.

If you are not hurry to be back at home Ambewela is the next best location closed t Nuwara Eliya. It's not far from Hakgala Gardens to Ambewela. In Ambewela you can visit New Zealand farms. Unfortunately the Famous Milco factory is currently closed for visitors. Ambewela animal farm is also not allowed for visitors. But at New Zealand farms you can see everything as same as Ambewela farm. both farms are managed by the same company.

Actually you will be wonder there is no such town called Ambewela. Ambewela is just a junction with two or three of very small tea shops. After that you can visit to the Strawberry and Vegetable farm managed by a private company located near Kande Ela. It's an Amazing experience to see how Strawberry is growing in green houses. Then you can have a visit to Kande ela Forest Garden and Meepilimana reservoir. There are separate posts about those locations and you can view them if you are interested to see more details. So have a nice journey. I visited all those places with using public transport in two days.

Strawberry Farm - Nuwara Eliya (ස්ට්‍රෝබෙරි ගොවිපොල)

I think this is most probably the first pictorial review of this place on internet. I googled about Strawberry farm of Nuwara Eliya before I visit there but I couldn't find any link with enough information and pictures. This Vegetable and Strawberry farm is Located near by the road of Nuwara Eliya - Pattipola closed to Meepilimana Reservoir. Not a hard place to find since a large hoarding at road side.

The Vegetable farm is spreads over very large area and it is impossible to walk through the farm due to the distance and steep roads. The farm management has arranged a service for visitors to take them around the Vegetable and Strawberry farm by a Tractor for a reasonable rate. It costs about 50 Rupees per one person. More >>

On the trail you can see beautifully grown potatoes, Carrot, Cabbage and many vegetables and very beautiful sceneries of mountains around the farm. The trail stops at a four big Green Houses and you can get off there. You are allowed to walk inside the green house and see how the Strawberries are cultivating. Take photographs is also possible.

It's an amazing experience since Strawberry is a not common fruit in our country and we can't see Strawberry plants anywhere else. Farm outlet is at the entrance of the Strawberry farm. Fresh Strawberries and Strawberry Jam is available there.

I saw there is also a beautiful bungalow at the top of hill maintained by the farm management. I think it will be possible for reservation from their head office.

Formerly known as Pitakande Military Cemetery, it was acquired originally by the military authorities, and was subsequently taken over by the Commission as a permanent war cemetery. The Army Graves Service transferred to this cemetery service war graves from Divatalawa Boer Military Cemetery; (including graves which had previously been moved from Divatalawa Camp Cemetery and Diyakaduwa Cemetery and from Bandarawala in the Punjab); Galkissa General Cemetery; Ihala Vitiyala Burial Ground; Kandy Civil Cemetery; Kollonawa Burial Ground; Kotagala Forest Creek Cemetery; Mahaiyawa Cemetery; Murugampola Cemetery; Rawatawatte General Cemetery, Moratura; Tibotugoda Etakorasa Cemetery and Trincomalee Hindu and Buddhist Cemetery. In 1958 the Commission moved in two graves from Kandy Civil Cemetery where permanent maintenance could not be assured. The Special Memorial commemorates a naval man known to have been buried in the cemetery but whose grave could not be precisely located. It bears the superscription "Buried near this spot". There is 1 Commonwealth burial of the 1914-1918 war and a further 196 Commonwealth burials of the 1939-1945 war commemorated here. Dambakola Patuna or Jambukola Patuna is an ancient port in the north of Jaffna which was used during pre christian times. After Arahath Mahinda brought Bhuddhism to Sri Lanka in 250BC, his sister, Theri Sanghamitta arrived in Sri Lanka with a Sacred Bo Sapling one year later to this port. The temple Samudda-panasala (Jambukola Viharaya) was built commemorating the arrival of the Bo sapling by King Devanampriya Tissa (250-210 BC). Later, the same king planted one of the first eight shoots of the Sri Maha Bodhi, on the same place where he kept the original tree before brining it to Anuradhapura. King Vijayabahu I (1070-1110) has restored this site. The remains of the vihara, such as the Buddha footprint stone and vatadage seen up to recent times no longer exist there.
